Project Overview

This Colwood property already had the makings of a lovely backyard space, but it lacked flow, structure, and nighttime usability. The homeowners wanted to keep the natural feel of the garden while upgrading the function and finish of their outdoor space. Their wish list included more seating space, a cleaner layout, lighting, and a pathway that felt both intentional and long-lasting.

Project Story

We kicked things off by expanding the patio with 24-inch smooth concrete pavers, which immediately gave the space more room to breathe. It provided a perfect spot for hosting or relaxing without interrupting the garden’s natural shape. However, working around existing features like irrigation lines and garden beds meant we had to carefully plan each cut and layout decision; one wrong move could have disrupted the system.

That led to one of our bigger challenges: the irrigation network. The lines were older, inconsistently mapped, and ran dangerously close to where the new beds and lighting would be installed. We traced, rerouted, and added new irrigation lines to serve the expanded planting zones, without disrupting the flow to the rest of the yard.

With the infrastructure resolved, we shaped new garden beds and brought in 4 yards of planting soil and 3 yards of mulch to refresh and define the space. The homeowner’s mother helped select the new plants, creating a meaningful connection to the garden’s new chapter.

To improve accessibility and visual appeal, we installed a pebble stone walkway, using a bonding agent to lock the stones in place and prevent movement or weeds over time. It connected the patio and beds seamlessly, and offered a durable solution for wet seasons.
The finishing touch was a low-voltage lighting system installed around the garden beds. These subtle fixtures made the space glow softly at night, highlighting the new layout while offering added safety along the path and patio edge.

A final round of overseeding ensured that the surrounding lawn matched the freshness of the new hardscape, and just like that, the Colwood courtyard became a functional, elegant extension of the home, ready for any time of day.
