Outdoor Patio Material Options
As you kickoff the design process for your new outdoor patio, there are a number of different materials to consider. The material’s weight, durability, visual appearance and price can all be taken into account.
While the best material may depend on the condition of your property, these are some of the most patio materials we work with in Victoria:
Poured Concrete Patios
Poured concrete is one of the more popular patio materials due to its impressive versatility. It can be poured as the colour of cement, or customized to any colour you’d like. After it’s poured, the cement can then be stamped a number of ways to add a little style and mimic the appearance of stone. Plus, concrete is a generally more affordable than other materials.
Concrete Paver Patios
If you prefer a more textured look to your outdoor patio, concrete pavers might be a good option. Similar to poured concrete, concrete pavers offer the same durability and customization, but with the added bonus of easy maintenance. Pavers can simply be replaced individually with wear and tear.
Natural Stone Patios
To dial up the elegance and visual appeal of your outdoor patio, natural stone is the way to go. A stone patio can be a lifetime. Plus, different colour stones can be used to build a patio with a more natural looking appearance. The material is a little heavier, tougher to install and expensive, but the end result is well-worth it every time.
Here are some well-loved stone patio options:
- Flagstone is one of the most frequently used types of stone. This non-slip material uses a combination of sandstone, limestone and slate of unique shapes to provide a more rustic look.
- Granite is an extremely elegant material that works well in our wet climate. The material is known for its weather-resistant properties and excellent durability.
- Cobblestone is a classic combination of stones – typically granite or basalt. Built with rounded off stone, cobblestone is also very durability and brings an unmistakable old-world appearance to you outdoor space.
Brick Patios
Brick is a material that’s truly timeless and works incredibly for outdoor patios. Brick will last forever, plus it’s weather resistance allows it to survive freeze-thaw cycles without incurring damage.
Gravel Patios
Gravel or crush rock is a patio material option that’s relatively affordable and easy to install. It looks great blended among gardens and other hardscaped areas along with being fully customizable and painless to maintain.
Gravel has the added bonus of being superior for drainage. A gravel patio funnels rainwater directly into the ground instead of deflecting it into puddles in nearby grass or beds, which could create runoff and erosion over time.
Patio Styles & Features
An outdoor patio can be used for a variety of functions, from luxury outdoor dining and entertaining to backyard lounging. We’re here to help bring your ideas to life. Here are a few patio styles to consider:
1. Raised Patio
These patios are elevated and leveled above the ground grade. This style can improve views of the yard while offering more privacy – an ideal choice for a yard with sloped or uneven terrain. These patios are often supported by surrounding retaining walls, and can be built using a range of different materials.
2. Tiered Patio
A tiered patio is a multi-level outdoor space that uses at least two different levels connected by stairs and retaining walls. These patios allow for different activities on each level, including options for entertaining and dining outdoors. Similar to a house, different “rooms” of the patio are designed for different purposes.
3. At-grade Patio
An at-grade patio is on that’s built flush and level with the surrounding landscape, blending seamlessly into your yard or gardens. This option works well for flat properties, often sitting on a compact gravel base.
4. Covered Patio
These patios are a top choice for entertaining. A covered patio provides not only shade and protection from the elements, but a sense of enclosure that encourages socializing. There are a number of covered styles to choose from, including pavilions, pergolas and gazebos.
Aside from the construction style of your patio, you might also want to consider how it will function. There are a number of features that can be added to increase outdoor livability, including:
- Dining and lounge areas
- Fire pits and surrounds
- Patio lighting
- Raised patio gardens and retaining walls
- Poolside patios
- Hot tub foundations
- Outdoor kitchens

Our Patio Building Process
With an emphasis on thorough planning and open communication, here’s what our patio building process looks like:
1. Initial Consult
During our first meeting, we’ll visit your property to discuss all of your plans. We’ll ask plenty of questions about your style, layout goals, space usage and budget. Together, we’ll figure out how your ideas will integrate with the surrounding landscape. From there, we’ll be able to determine whether your project will be a more simple at-grade build, or a more complex installation.
2. Site Assessment
Once your plan has been squared away, we’ll conduct a separate site assessment where we’ll take important measurements of grade and slope, while analyzing drainage, equipment access, existing irrigation and proximity to trees and property lines.
3. Approvals & Permits
Before we’re able to kick off construction, we’ll need approval from the city. For simple patios, this process is quick and easy, while complicated projects may trigger permit reviews or zoning variances. This process is something our team can handle completely to save you the headache.
4. Design
Once assessment have been completed and approvals secured, we’ll start thinking about more complex design challenges. Things like foot traffic flow, edging, transitions and drainage. We also want to make sure your patio project is well integrated with your home.
5. Material Selection
This is where the fun begins. With your help, we’ll select materials that fit best with your style and needs, whether you want something modern, formal, or more natural looking.
6. Proposal & Schedule
With plans in place, we’ll issue you a contract covering the scope of work, material allowances, schedules and payment terms.
